New ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ Japanese Trailer & Clips – Captain Kirk Finds Danger
It’s time for some more Star Trek Into Darkness promotional material, for those of you who haven’t already called it quits ahead of sitting down to watch the sequel in theaters. Director J.J. Abrams’ followup to his reboot of the Star Trek franchise remains shrouded in mystery, despite so many images, trailers, and clips having premiered at this point; as our Kofi Outlaw predicted in this week’s Screen Rant Underground podcast, if the secrets of Into Darkness fail to justify the build-up, we could be facing another Prometheus situation (i.e. where a strong divide forms between the lovers and haters).
Our Star Trek roundup today consists of a one-minute Japanese-subtitled trailer, a new clip teasing one of the film’s action sequences, and a companion piece to last week’s viral promo with John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch) now threatening Spock, rather than Captain Kirk.
The Japanese trailer highlights one of the first major set piece from Into Darkness, with Harrison wreaking havoc on London; that’s followed by the chain of events shown in previous trailers, which leads to a sizzle reel with familiar glimpses at Kirk diving through space, Spock in the heart of a volcano, Harrison with a malicious smug on his face, and the Enterprise in danger.
Save for a handful of shots here and there, this footage is nothing that you haven’t seen before (translation: no need to worry about spoilers).
Meanwhile, the second Into Darkness clip is taken from a previously-teased chase sequence where Kirk, Spock, Uhura and a couple other Enterprise crew members barely manage to escape from a pursuing spacecraft (which seems to be a Klingon vessel, to my eye anyway). Again, no major plot information is revealed here, fortunately; though, it does offer a nice tease of the 3D element in the film, which looks to be put to effective use.
Lastly, the second viral promo features Harrison verbally drawing a psychological profile for Spock, rather than Kirk, in his now familiar menacing way. It suggests that Spock’s character arc in the sequel will cover pretty standard territory for everyone’s favorite Vulcan, while his captain’s journey towards proving his worth ought to be much more dramatic and emotionally-intense.
Indeed, there’s one shot featured here that suggests a certain member of the Enterprise crew might be making a terrible sacrifice for the others (hint, hint), but we’ll have to wait and find out for certain…
