‘Hotel Transylvania’ Debuts Atop Home Video Charts
The horror spoof, starring Adam Sandler in the lead voice role, dominates in sales and rentals.
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment dominated the national sales as well as rental charts the week ending Feb. 3, scoring a rare triple-win with the animated comedy Hotel Transylvania.
The horror spoof, with Adam Sandler in the lead voice role, rode its domestic box office gross of $147.9 million to a No. 1 debut on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, which tracks overall disc sales; Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart; and Home Media Magazine’s weekly rental chart.

The No. 2 spot on all three charts went to three different titles. On First Alert, it’s PBS’ season three set of hit TV series Downton Abbey. On the Blu-ray Disc sales chart, it’s the latest animated direct-to-video animated DC Universe release from Warner, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns — Part 2. And on Home Media Magazine’s rental chart, the No. 2 spot went to the Sony Pictures thriller Seven Psychopaths.
20th Century Fox’s Taken 2 remained in high demand among disc purchasers, slipping to No. 3 from No. 2 the previous week on both sales charts. Paramount’s Paranormal Activity 4 debuted at No. 4 on both sales charts (and No. 3 on the rental chart). Rounding out the top five disc sellers: Batman: The Dark Knight Returns — Part 2 on First Alert and Seven Psychopaths on the Blu-ray Disc sales chart.
With so many new releases hitting stores, it’s no surprise that the prior week’s top seller, Universal Studios’ End of Watch, slipped to No. 7 on First Alert and No. 8 on the Blu-ray Disc sales chart.
